The new technology was also tested on their news titles, which by now finally had a catchier name. Carlton Tonight came from a failed attempt in a joint primetime newscast with LWT, following up on the plea that gained them their franchises in 1980. Originally named The London Network, LWT pulled out, leaving Carlton wholly in charge of the new programme - which was shown rather creatively on screen.

The background blocks would fly in, with the jumble of keywords following soon after, before opening up the middle part into the studio.
