Cute Selphie
Cute Selphie by @smarle (Staci/Nadia)

Aaaaaaaack, I drew Final Fantasy VIII fanart! O_o;;;;; I think I'm losing it... ^^;;;; I'm not exactly an FFVIII fan... ^^;;;

But anyways, I wanted to do a quickie marker pic, since I haven't completed a new picture in a while and I want this to be a productive drawing year for me... ^^;;; I thought that either Selphie, who I actually liked during my break playing of FFVIII, or Ulala from Space Channel 5. Since the pose I wanted for Ulala would require me to play Space Channel 5 again, I decided to go ahead and draw Selphie, since she's pretty easy, and my website's Final Fantasy gallery could use some new work.

I drew most of the picture of her from memory of what she looked like. It actually turned out pretty well! Then I went to RPGamer for reference pictures to make sure everything was accurate... The official artwork of her is pretty scary-looking, LOL... Thankfully, my rendition of her is cuter-looking (IMO)... ^^;;; She has softer hair and bigger eyes... Finding something to do with her arms/hands was probably the hardest part... ^^;;; She's supposed to be holding a paper that she's gonna hang onto a wall, little club joiner that she is...

I'm happy with this little quickie! The inking and coloring turned out well... I made some mistakes in inking her hair, but I tried to fix it with the shading. The skin shading color turned out a lot darker than I expected, so I used a white Prismacolor pencil to lighten it a little, and to fix the shading between her open eye and nose area... That's probably the most awkward part of the picture... I wish I had one of those white pens to fix my highlights, though... Prismacolor marker colors bleed easily... ^^;;;; I had to fix the color levels when I scanned this in... Her skin shading was so red... Her normal skin is a little less pink than originally, but I think it looks more accurate than when I first scanned. Aaaaaaand that's enough babble from me... ^^;;;

Looks great, Nadi! I agree, it does look cuter than the original art...but you cutify everything, so that's not saying much. ^_^

Never liked Selphie much, in fact I think Zell was the only FF8 character I halfway liked.

Draw more! =D

Cuteness, Nadia! Looks like what would happen if Selphie was a Chrono Trigger character. Definitely. I love how you applied your style while staying true to the character's design and personality. You did a really good job keeping the light source consistant -- that may be why your coloring looks so nice ^_^ The flyer was also a really cute idea. Good job, draw more!

Chrono Trigger character, eh? Wouldn't she have to be kinda short and kinda muscled? ;)

Sometimes it's hard knowing how the light source will affect everything in a picture, but I do my best... ^-^

The flyer just seemed so... Selphie! And it was the only thing I could think of her holding (from what I played, I didn't think she seemed very bookish... ^^;;;). Oh, well... ^^;

She's absolutely adorable! Regardless of the character herself, this is such a cute little sketch. You've really brought out a girly, innocent feel to this character with that cute pose. I really am impressed by the coloring--the shading is very nice (though a little off on the forearm--only one side should be that dark) and I really like the highlights.

White pens are awesome. Sakura Gellyroll gel pens--you can find them in the scrapbooking section of arts and crafts stores. They are a little over a dollar for one, though, but if you can scrape together some change to cover it, mine has lasted a long time, so I think it's well worth it.

::grins:: when I first noticed her holding the piece of paper, I thought it was a love letter. That cute, knowing smile seems to say something like that. Great image, and I'm glad to see some uploading from you. :)

Yay, thanks! ^-^ Hmmmm, you're right about the forearm... I wish I had more variety in shading colors so there could be differences in the amount of shading, like with Photoshop... Either that or I just need more marker practice... Well, that's what this picture was for, anyways!

Ooooooooh, thanks for the tip! I'll get one of those tomorrow when I go to Michaels!

Hee, a love letter? That's a cute idea! Maybe if I ever do a Quistis picture, I'll have her with a love letter or two from her Trepies... ^-^
