Baringa and Dawn by @Swift (Shelley L.)
Was feeling pretty low about my art after seeing some extremely good pictures around...so, decided to draw. And I feel a lot better now =)
Anyways, it's Baringa and Dawn from The Silver Brumby, galloping through a snowfield in the moonlight. Done with Painter in watercolour...my first try at a night scene (was too scared to do them before). Turned out quite well, I think ^-^

you have superb horse drawing skills, dunno why you would feel low about your artistic skills. But, i'm glad you feel better now, this picture is great. But one thing.... lol at first i didnt think it looked like a night scene because my PCs colour settings are set on being brighter.... dark is TOO dark and light is TOO light... anyway, on default settings this pic looks even better. you did good with the highlights.
one more thing, the Silver Brumby... is that based off the movie called The Silver Stallion... which is ABOUT brumbies?
Actually, I saw a movie called the Silver Brumby--I had forgotten about it until this lovely image reminded me. I forget what it was about, but I remember it was really good.
Sometimes, when you've been dazzled by too much existing talent, it kinda brings your self-esteem crashing down quite a lot, especially when you haven't been drawing well in your own eyes for a while. After drawing this I felt a lot better about myself. Thanks! I'm glad you like the picture =) Actually, the book came first. The Silver Brumby movie was based on the book series of the same name by an Australian writer. There was also an animated series made based on the books. Unfortunately the books and the cartoon aren't very well-known so most people are only familiar with the movie.

Nice! Love the colors. The background almost looks like real media upon first glance. I think the color of the sky is a little too overly saturated for a night scene, and the shadows on the horsies could be darkened more. Great style!
Thanks! Yeah, the thing I love about Painter is that it emulates real media very closely. I do agree with you about the shadows of the horses...and I'll take note not to make the sky so bright next time. Thanks for the tip!

Preee-eee-teee! I love the nightscene! Is that snow they're running on? Because my computer sees the night sky as a little bright as well. But if that's snow on the ground I think the moon would be all reflecty all over the place, so it'd be brighter x) So it's peerrrfeeect! The horses' anatomy is great, love this!
Yeah, they're running on snow. Snow plays a very big role in these horses lives so I had to draw them with snow ;)

Her legs are skinny if ya compare them to real life horses, but in cartoons, I guess it's just to emphasize her sleekness and feminity. =3

Darn you, you have Painter Oo I've been looking for that program everywhere and I still can't find it... ah well.
This does look pretty good; I love the sense of motion conveyed by their flowing hair and the tufts on their hocks. The anatomy looks awesome too, especially in the fact that at one glance you can differenciate the two genders. (Though I'm not sure which names belong to which horse, I'm guessing the white female is Dawn?) She's so sleek and pretty. ^__^
About the coloring itself, it's been rendered pretty well, especially on Baringa's (male horse) body, the blue undertones are great and add to the effect of night-timeness. I do think however that the sky (minus clouds) could have been slightly darker, perhaps with a little gradient, to accentuate the image. But all in all this is a really cool image, great job.
