According to medieval bestiaries, the ichneumon or Egyptian mongoose was one of the few creatures that were immune to being stoned by a cockatrice's deadly gaze. However, they didn't usually wear hats or carry firearms.

Also, look! Liberties probably taken with the mongoose and wild ones definitely taken for the rifle. You just try finding references for mongoose-sized hunting rifles at the drop of a hat.
