Compared to how he conducts his shadow war later, I might've given Johnson a bit too much credit. :p His line that he can't read Japanese underscores the fact that while he thinks he's acting on behalf of the Republic, he's not even in touch with "his" own culture, an irony compounded by the fact it's actually a Korean proverb.
