Pouwhenua (land post) outside the Whangarei Central Library, view toward the District Council building. Pou are used by the Maori to mark territorial boundaries and locations of significance. Similar to totem poles of the Pacific Northwest, they are richly decorated and regarded today as cultural monuments in their own right.
