In Iron and Blood 4, the Hawaiʻian Islands were first charted by Japanese seafarers in the 18th Century. Deemed too remote for concerted colonization efforts, they nonetheless attracted independent immigrants such that by the 20th Century, Japanese settlers outnumbered native Hawaiʻians, and local culture had been partially assimilated into Japanese folklore. The archipelago remained an independent kingdom until 1908, when the recently-ascended kampaku (Imperial Regent) Toyotomi Musashi launched a bloodless amphibious invasion of the islands in what was effectively a massive propaganda stunt, annexing the kingdom as the empire's newest Region.
